Biography

My Background

Praised by The Capital for his “rock-solid vocalism and powerful projection,” bass Jeffrey Tarr enjoys an extensive international career spanning opera, oratorio, and recital stages. As a dynamic performer, he has sung with esteemed companies including the Washington National Opera, Baltimore Concert Opera, UrbanArias, The InSeries, and Germany's Festspiele Gut Immling. His operatic repertoire features roles such as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, König Marke in Tristan und Isolde, and Polyphemus in Acis and Galatea. Critics consistently laud his stage presence; The Washington Post described his portrayal of Basilio in Annapolis Opera's Il barbiere di Siviglia as "fervent and robust." Additional international and notable credits include Argante in Rinaldo and Zuniga in Carmen at Gut Immling Festspiele, as well as Crespel in Les contes d’Hoffmann in Berlin under the direction of Gidon Saks.

Equally accomplished on the concert stage, Mr. Tarr is a highly sought-after bass soloist for major symphonic masterworks. He has delivered commanding performances of Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Bach’s Magnificat, and the Requiems of Mozart, Brahms, and Fauré. His collaborative highlights include appearances with the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, Cathedral Choral Arts Society, Frederick Symphony Orchestra, and the Capital City Symphony. As a recitalist, his voice has resonated in world-renowned venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Reviewing his performance of Messiah with the New Dominion Chorale and Orchestra, The Washington Post declared his singing "outstanding… a large, resonant voice, filled with both power and clarity."

Bridging the gap between elite performance and vocal science, Dr. Jeffrey Tarr is also a dedicated voice instructor and vocal pedagogy expert. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance with an emphasis in Vocal Pedagogy from the University of North Texas, complementing a Master of Music from the Peabody Conservatory and a Bachelor of Arts from Tennessee Temple University. A prize winner in the Annapolis Opera, Orpheus Vocal, and Vocal Arts DC Discovery competitions, he has supplemented his training at the Middlebury College German for Singers program and the American Wagner Project. Passing on his expertise to the next generation of vocalists, Dr. Tarr is presently the Coordinator of Vocal Studies at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX.
