MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Singing as Transformation

Singing transforms breath into beauty. While this transformation may feel mysterious, the process behind it does not have to be. As a voice instructor, I help singers develop a solid technical foundation based on the principles of healthy singing: posture, inhalation, breath support, resonance, and articulation.

When this foundation is secure, the possibilities for artistic communication and personal expression become limitless. It is upon this foundation that a lifelong passion for singing can be built.

The Individual Voice

I believe the singing voice is most compelling when it functions as an extension of the speaking voice. The uniqueness of each voice is what makes it beautiful. Every singer also brings their own aesthetic perspective and personality to their music-making; therefore, vocal training must be individualized.

When I begin working with a new student, I approach the process with humility. Just as the student is learning how the voice works, I am learning how their voice works, what their artistic goals are, and what aesthetic choices resonate with them. During each lesson I strive to be an attentive listener and observer—both of the student’s sound and of their experience as they develop.

The Voice Studio Environment

In my studio I cultivate an atmosphere of trust, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. Students are encouraged to experiment and discover their own capabilities within a supportive environment.

My approach to feedback can best be described as honesty tempered with kindness. I strive to be direct but never condemning, and concise but never dismissive.

My teaching is both empirical—informed by experience—and functional, grounded in an understanding of the vocal mechanism from anatomical and acoustical perspectives. While I often describe technique physiologically, I adapt my explanations to suit the learning styles of each student. Demonstration and modeling, for example, can be especially helpful for beginning singers because they engage visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning.

Health Before Impressiveness

In my teaching, the hierarchy of good singing is clear: health first, beauty second, and impressiveness last. Attempts to sound impressive without attention to vocal beauty and health often lead to inefficient or unhealthy singing.

A healthy voice is one that is well-supported, even throughout the registers, agile, capable of varied dynamics, resonant, focused, vibrant, and free of unnecessary tension. Achieving this requires developing awareness of the body and the sensations of singing.

Students learn to rely on their own senses—how an effective inhalation feels within the torso, how resonance changes across registers, and how posture should appear and feel. I also emphasize the balance between muscular activation and release. Excess tension in the tongue, jaw, torso, limbs, or even the hands can interfere with tone production, while appropriate muscular engagement is essential. Effective singing always involves balance.

Training the Complete Singing Professional

My teaching extends beyond vocal technique to include the broader skills required of professional singers. These include diction in multiple languages, stage presence, facial expression, audition technique, collegial professionalism, and effective methods for learning and memorizing music.

My approach is suitable for singers of all experience levels and for a wide range of musical styles. Lessons are detailed but practical, designed to produce consistent results through patience, practice, and time.

Building Confidence and Artistic Identity

An important part of my work as a teacher is helping singers believe in their own potential. Students must first believe that a goal is possible before they can commit fully to achieving it.

Often this belief comes from rethinking approaches that have proven ineffective and discovering new strategies that work. Just as I guide singers toward physical balance in their technique, I also strive to help them develop confidence in their own abilities.

When a singer is committed to developing their voice to its fullest potential, my role is to provide the guidance, tools, and encouragement necessary to help them succeed.
